Welcome to Monday Room

The Monday Room is a calm, neuroaffirming studio in Stratford, Ontario for teen girls who thrive in low-pressure environments. Participants can work on personal creative projects, relax, or connect with other participants with no pressure to perform, socialize or mask. If they wish, teens are welcome to bring independent learning or online schoolwork if they would like to use the space that way.

The space is guided by a self-directed learning ethos. It is designed for people who may not feel at home in a fast-paced, socially demanding, or highly-structured group setting and who are looking for a quieter place to work on projects, spend time alongside others, and follow their own interests.

The Monday Room was created by Sara Wilken, a social worker in Stratford Ontario.

Who is the Monday Room For?

The Monday Room is designed for teen girls ages 14-18 who would feel comfortable in a neuroaffirming space, enjoy creative activities and benefit from calm, low-pressure environments.

Some participants may be autistic, ADHD, otherwise neurodivergent, anxious, socially cautious, or simply more comfortable in environments other than conventional programs.

A diagnosis is not required. What matters most is that the space feel like a good fit.

Participants may enjoy Monday Room if they:

  • prefer quieter, lower-demand settings

  • like working on their own projects in the company of others

  • need time to warm up socially

  • feel drained by highly structured or high pressure environments

  • value autonomy, creativity, and being accepted as they are.

You can bring your own project or choose something from the studio supplies.

Participation is flexible—some girls may work quietly on their own projects while others may talk or collaborate.

Self-Directed Learning

The space is shaped by a self-directed learning ethos, which means:

  • personal interests are taken seriously

  • autonomy is respected

  • participation is not forced

  • relationships matter

  • there is room for different energies, communication styles and ways of being

  • participants can help shape the evolution of the program as it develops
